I doubt that this recipe, or rather even a series of recipes, united under the common title “in French” has anything to do with France. But, the dish is old, it came to us from Russian times, most often we cook it with meat, chicken or fish. But there is also room for variation with vegetables only. Potatoes, which will be our main ingredient, are baked in the oven, covered with cheese, and they can become either an independent dish or a side dish for some kind of meat. Well? French-style potatoes in the oven: recipe with step-by-step photos

Ingredients for 6-8 servings:

  • potatoes – 600g;
  • onion – 1-2 heads;
  • cheese – 200g;
  • sour cream (or mayonnaise) – 300g;
  • vegetable oil – 2 tbsp;
  • salt – 1 tsp;
  • dark ground pepper – 0.5 tsp.
  • ground paprika – 1 tsp.

How to cook French potatoes in the oven

  1. First, let's prepare the products. Peel and wash the potatoes.
  2. Remove the skins from the onion and cut into half rings. If the onion is small, then it is better to take two, because, in my opinion, there should be more onions in this dish, and then there will be more juiciness and taste.
  3. Three cheese on a grater. It is better to take cheese types that simply melt.
  4. Cut the potatoes into circles or semicircles if the tubers are huge. The thickness of the slices must certainly be similar, otherwise later in the oven, thin ones will cook faster and begin to fall apart or burn, while thick ones may remain raw and tough. I usually make potatoes as thick as in the photo, about 7 mm.
  5. Pour oil into the frying pan and heat thoroughly. Add potato slices and fry, stirring frequently so that a light golden crust forms on any piece. We fry it for a short time, until half-cooked, and it will be ready in the oven.
  6. Line a baking sheet with foil. Spread the potatoes over it in one layer. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and paprika. You can add other spices if you wish. Provençal herbs are excellent.
  7. The next layer is onion. Use sparingly throughout potatoes.
  8. Grease with sour cream. For those who prefer mayonnaise, lubricate it with it.
  9. And sprinkle with cheese.
  10. Place in an oven previously preheated to 180°C. Baking time is approximately 30 minutes. When it passes, we check the readiness by piercing a circle of potatoes with the tip of a knife or the tines of a fork. If the cheese crust does not seem crispy enough for you, increase the heat to 220°C and hold for a couple more minutes. If, on the contrary, during the manufacturing process the cheese begins to bake very quickly and very quickly, you can cover the top with foil and remove it at the end.

  9. Cover with foil or a lid if you have a pan with a lid. Bake in the oven at 175°C. As for how long to bake, it usually takes 40 minutes, but you need to check the readiness of the potatoes, then remove the foil and keep in the oven for another 5-10 minutes until the cheese is browned.
