Cocktail Margarita: making a popular drink with a lady's name
The Margarita cocktail (Spanish: Margarita) originated in Latin America, but the exact space and creator are still unidentified. At the moment, it is one of the most favorites in all corners of the globe. Its traditional composition includes tequila, citrus liqueur, lime juice and crushed or cubed ice. The alcohol has a strength of about 18 degrees. Calorie content is low - approximately 200 kcal per 100 g.
This drink has a huge number of variations, and is made differently in each country. Due to the lack of a single recipe, the ingredients can be varied at your own discretion. Let's take a step-by-step look at how to make a homemade Margarita cocktail without the help of others in several varieties.
Basic drink recipe
There are a huge number of unconfirmed guesses about the origin of this alcohol and they all agree on one thing: the name appeared thanks to a woman’s name. But who she was, a celebrity or the beloved woman and muse of the creator, remains a mystery until now.
The delicious alcoholic cocktail Margarita will be especially appropriate on hot summer days while relaxing on the beach or on a picnic. It's just completely refreshing and invigorating. He will also be able to become the “highlight” of the program of any celebration or ordinary friendly gatherings.

Traditional margarita cocktail recipe at home:
- Pour ice into a shaker, then pour in the other watery ingredients, stir thoroughly;
- Rinse the rim of the glass with water, then carefully place it in a plate with plenty of salt, then shake off the excess so that a small amount of granules remains on the rim. How to create this correctly can be seen in the photo below;
- Open the shaker and carefully pour its contents into the glass, insert a straw. As a decoration, attach a slice of lemon or lime to the edge.
Alcohol is drunk in small sips and held in the mouth for a couple of seconds before swallowing. With all this, a long pleasant aftertaste remains.
Strawberry version
Strawberry Margarita is one of the varieties that is especially loved among the ladies. It can become a decoration for any club party or bachelorette party.
- Silver tequila – 50 ml;
- Crushed ice – 150 g;
- Juice from half a lime (40 ml);

- Little sweet sand.
- Make a rim of sugar on the glass using the same method as in the previous instruction with salt;
- Place all ingredients in a blender and beat until smooth;

Making a Margarita cocktail in this unique version is quite simple:
- Cool the glass well. If desired, make a salt border on it;
- Mix all ingredients thoroughly in a blender or shaker;
- Pour the contents into a glass and attach a lemon wedge as decoration.
With this, the wonderful “liquid dish” is ready.
Ginger-apple version
This recipe will appeal to connoisseurs of fruit drinks, because there is a cool combination of alcohol, syrup and apple.
- Lime and apple juice – 20 and 25 ml, respectively;
- Silver tequila – 50 ml;
- Ginger syrup – 15 ml;
- Ice cubes – 200 g;
- A piece of apple for decoration.
How to create a margarita cocktail:
- If desired, decorate the glass with a rim of sugar or salt;
- Pour all the watery ingredients into a shaker, fill the top with ice and shake well;
- Pour the prepared mixture into a pre-chilled glass and garnish with an apple slice. To prevent it from darkening, it is better to drink alcohol immediately after production.
This is not a complete list of the contrasts of this alcohol. There are even more of them. Among them are a huge number of unique versions with extraordinary taste and color. The components and their proportions can be varied at your own discretion, coming up with the latest recipes worthy of attention. But it is worth keeping in mind that the traditional composition of ingredients should remain in the base, and they can be supplemented, but not completely replaced with others, otherwise you will get a completely different “swill.”

Cocktail Margarita – simplicity that has conquered the world
More than sixty years have passed since the Margarita cocktail originated in Mexico. Now it is prepared in all corners of the Earth. Thanks to its usual composition and excellent taste, this cocktail is considered one of the most popular in the world. I will teach you how to make Margarita at home.
Historical reference. It is believed that the alcoholic cocktail Margarita originated in 1936-1948. in one of the bars in South America. It was not possible to establish a clear space and the creator of the recipe. The version about the Mexican origin of the drink is based only on the fact that the tequila included in Margarita is more widespread specifically in Mexico.
Historians are unanimous on one thing - the cocktail is named after the lady named Margarita. But who she was: a local celebrity or the beloved lady of the creator of the drink remained unknown. I did not publish the remaining versions of the origin (there are more than 10 of them), because none of them is supported by facts.
Composition and proportions:
- silver tequila – 40 ml;
- orange liqueur – 20 ml;
- lime juice – 40 ml;
- ice – 150 gr.
The International Bartenders Association (IBA) recommends mixing the ingredients in a ratio of 7:4:3 (seven parts tequila, four orange liqueur and three parts lime juice). But historically the correct proportion is 2:1:2.
Recently, some bartenders began to add salt to the cocktail, because it is customary to drink tequila in its pure form with it. Personally, I am a follower of the traditional recipe, tested over the years. It is better to use salt only to decorate the edges of the glass.
Cocktail recipe Margarita
1. Fill a shaker with ice, add tequila, orange liqueur (I recommend Cointreau), lime juice (you can substitute lemon juice). Shake.
2. Moisten the edges of the glass in water and place it in a plate with plenty of salt. Remove excess salt so that only a thin rim remains on the glass (see sketch).
3. Pour the contents of the shaker into a glass through a strainer. Garnish with a slice of lemon or lime.
“Margarita” is drunk in small sips, holding the drink in the mouth for a couple of seconds beforehand, so that a long aftertaste remains. Ladies are served a cocktail with a straw. The calorie content of one serving is 280 calories. Strength – 24-25%.

History of the Margarita cocktail
There are a huge number of versions of the origin of the Margarita cocktail, and it is not clear who invented this drink and when. It is assumed that margarita originated between 1936 and 1948.
According to cocktail historian David Wondrich, the margarita is a variation of the popular Mexican drink "Daisy" with brandy swapped for tequila. This cocktail was popular in the mid-1930s, during Prohibition in the United States (the United States of America is a state in North America) , when Americans came to Mexico to buy alcohol.
But according to a more popular version, "Margarita" was invented by Dallas socialist Margarita Seymes. While on vacation in Acapulco in 1948, she mixed two of her favorite drinks, Cointreau and tequila, along with lime juice. This cocktail caught the fancy of Tommy Hilton, the owner of the Hilton hotel chain, in one of which Margarita stopped. He began serving this cocktail in his own bars and hotel restaurants, thus spreading the drink throughout the mainland.
Making Tips
To get a good cocktail, it is important to use liqueur and tequila of the highest quality. I advise you to choose Reposado or Olmeca Tezon Blanco tequila. The only liqueur is Cointreau. It is also important to use freshly squeezed lime juice. If you want to make your margarita a little sweeter, add a little sweet syrup or agave nectar.
According to the unique recipe provided by the Cointreau company, the cocktail must be combined in proportions 2:1:1 (tequila:liqueur:juice). You can also find other options for proportions, for example 2:1:2 (the lightest version of the cocktail) or 10:4:3 (the official version of the International Bartenders Association).
Varieties of Margarita
- "Fragrant Margarita" Take apple cinnamon tequila, triple sec, cranberry juice, and lime juice in a 2:1:1:1 ratio and mix for a nice fall cocktail.
- "Blue Margarita" For this cocktail variation, simply swap out the “Cointreau” for “Blue Curacao.”
- "Frozen Margarita" Simply blend your margarita in a blender with ice.
- "Pivmarita". Margarita with the addition of a small amount of light Corona beer.
- "Skinny Margarita." Margarita without liquor, just tequila and lime juice.
When making margaritas, you can use almost all juices and fruits, for example, mango, peach, strawberry, banana, melon or raspberry. Also, coconut cream, milk or water are perfectly mixed with this cocktail.
Cocktail strength
The strength of tequila is 38-40%, Cointreau liqueur - 40%. When mixed in the proportions indicated in the recipe, the resulting drink has a strength of approximately 23 degrees, which makes it far from the lightest. If you serve Margarita with ice in a glass, the cocktail's temperature will be slightly lower.
Cocktail Margarita
Short history : the Margarita cocktail was created in the middle of the 20th century. The clear date of creation and the name of its creator are unclear, because none of the likely contenders for this title have patented the recipe. Nevertheless, the cocktail became incredibly popular, and Tommy Hilton played an important role in this, who, after tasting the drink, introduced it to the menu of his own restaurants. Tommy was treated to a “wonderful consistency” by Margarita Sames, who was credited as the creator of “Margarita” in 1999. The rest of the stories, romantic and not very romantic, do not have sufficient grounds, although they also have the right to life. So, the creators of the cocktail would be entirely bartenders Denny Guerrera, Pancho Moralez, Johnny Darlesser, Rede Hinton, manager Denny Negrete, etc.
Types and varieties : in addition to the classic version, it can be “colored”: blue, pink, etc., and may contain, in addition to fresh lime juice, any other freshly squeezed juices.
Effect on the body : this is a ladies' drink, gentle and refreshing. It gives a romantic mood and encourages closeness.
How to drink a Margarita cocktail correctly : for this cocktail there is a special Margarita glass, the edges of which are usually decorated with salt (it is not the main component at all). They drink the drink in small sips directly from the glass, carefully savoring each sip, or through a straw.
Cost : varies. Depends on the bar group.
Fundamentally : the alcohol in the cocktail must be of the highest quality, and the juices must be freshly squeezed.
The Margarita cocktail is perfect for both a fun party and a romantic dinner for two. Since it is not cloyingly sweet, both ladies and men like it equally. Its strength is about 20%, so it quickly gets you drunk, but due to the restraint of juices, the alcohol in the drink is not felt at all. In addition, using different proportions, you can prepare several cocktail options from just 3 ingredients!
Cocktail Margarita: “Traditional”
This is the most popular recipe that can be prepared in a huge range of variations.
- silver tequila 50 ml.
- orange liqueur (Cointreau/ Triple Sec) 25 ml.
- lime juice (lemon) 50 ml (lime weighing 70 g)
- sweet syrup 10 ml (optional)
- ice cubes 150 gr.
- large salt (for decoration of the glass)
You need to cook like this:
- Decorate the glass with salt: moisten its edges with juice and place them in a plate with plenty of salt.
- Place all ingredients in a shaker, including ice, and shake vigorously.
- The cocktail is poured into a glass (chilled) and garnished with a slice of lime, orange, lemon or cocktail cherry.
The proportions in the cocktail can be changed!
The above option is the most popular, it is considered the best and provides for the following ratio: liqueur - 2 parts, tequila - 2 parts, juice - 1 part (2: 2: 1)
But there are other mixing options:
- In a ratio of 4:7:3 (liquor - 29%, tequila - 50%, juice - 21% (classic according to the International Bartenders Association)
- In a ratio of 1:2:1 (liqueur - 25%, tequila - 50%, juice - 25%)
- In a ratio of 2:3:1 (liquor - 33%, tequila - 50%, juice - 17%)
- In a ratio of 1:3:1 (liqueur - 20%, tequila - 60%, juice - 20%)
- In a ratio of 1:1:1 (liquor - 33%, tequila - 33%, juice - 33%)
This recipe is also sometimes called “Silver Margarita”. If instead of “Silver” tequila in this recipe you take “Golden”, then you will get a “Golden Margarita”.
The Strawberry Margarita cocktail has a cool taste. It differs from the “Traditional” one, perhaps, only in the presence of strawberries in the composition. It can be called a seasonal cocktail, although you can try making a Strawberry Margarita cocktail using frozen berries.
Strawberry Margarita cocktail recipe:
- silver tequila 50 ml.
- orange liqueur (Cointreau/ Triple Sec) 25 ml.
- lime juice (or lemon) 50 ml
- strawberries – 4-6 pcs.
- sweet/strawberry syrup or strawberry liqueur 10 ml
- crushed ice 150 gr.
- sugar (for decoration of glass)
You need to cook like this:
- Decorate the glass with salt: moisten its edges with juice and dip them into a plate with sugar.
- Mix all ingredients in a blender and pour into a glass.
You can prepare the Strawberry Margarita cocktail in another way: cut the strawberries (or grind them separately in a blender) and shake all the ingredients vigorously in a shaker.
Below we will present several more cocktail options. With all this, when preparing a drink, you can use at home not only silver tequila, but also gold, snow-white and any other (preferably light). Options with its types are important only for bartenders, but for the home the main thing is that the tequila is of good quality.
We will not repeat ourselves, each time describing the method of making cocktails. All options are prepared either in a blender or in a shaker (following the example of a traditional recipe or strawberry one). The best option is a shaker. Just before putting the component into it, make a puree from the fruit fillers, and crush the ice, if necessary.
You also need to decorate the glass in a standard way: a slice of citrus fruit on the edge of the glass or a piece of the fruit/berry that is in the base of the drink (a piece of strawberry, melon, cherry, etc.)
In any recipe, you can increase the amount of ingredients as desired (without violating the proportions).
"Cherry Margarita"
Prepare:
- tequila – 50 ml
- lime/lemon juice – 40 ml
- orange liqueur – 15 ml
- pitted cherries/cherries (mashed with a spoon) – 20-30 gr. (10 pieces.)
- cherry syrup - 30 ml
- ice cubes – 8 pcs.
- salt or sugar, or a 1:1 mixture of both (for decoration of the glass)
Margarita is prepared in the same way from apricot, peach, melon, banana, raspberry, tangerine, mango, etc. All you have to do is replace cherry puree with the same amount of puree from these fruits, and replace the cherry syrup with sweet or fruit syrup. Cocktails can be prepared without syrup.
You can also take pomegranate or apple juice instead of fruit puree.
"Blue Margarita"
Prepare:
- silver tequila - 30 ml
- Blue Curacao liqueur – 15 ml
- orange liqueur (Cointreux/Triple Sec) - 10 ml
- lime/lemon juice – 20 ml (1/2 fruit)
- ice cubes – 5 pieces
- sugar (for decoration of glass)
Some people prefer to prepare this liqueur without orange liqueur. Try cooking it both ways and decide which option you like best.
"Pink Margarita"
- silver tequila - 30 ml
- raspberry liqueur - 10 ml
- lime/lemon juice – 10 ml (1/4 fruit)
- pomegranate syrup (Grenadine) – 1 tsp.
- ice cubes - 200 gr.
- sugar (for decoration of glass)
"Margarita Hypnotic"
This blue, tropical margarita is very unique and refreshing.
- tequila “Blue Dragon” – 45 ml
- Hypnotiq liqueur – 30 ml
- Blue Curacao liqueur – 15 ml
- pineapple juice – 30 ml
- sweet and sour mix – 50 ml
- ice cubes – 5 – 8 pieces
- sugar (for decoration of glass)
To make a sweet and sour mix: dissolve 50 g. sugar in 50 ml of water, add 50 ml of freshly squeezed lemon juice and 50 ml of freshly squeezed lime juice, cool.
The preparation of this cocktail is the same as in previous versions: mix all the ingredients in a shaker and pour into a glass framed with sugar around the rim.

- golden tequila – 30 ml
- Campari liqueur - 15 ml
- passion fruit syrup - 15 ml
- "Sprite" - 100 ml
- lime/lemon juice – 15 ml (1/3 fruit)
- ice cubes – 300 gr.
