Stuffed cabbage rolls are a popular dish of Eastern European, Middle Eastern and Asian cuisines. In Germany they are called cabbage sausages, in Spain - stuffed cabbage, in France - cabbage cigars. The Russian name “cabbage rolls” originated in the mid-19th century. At that time, French fried pigeons were in vogue, which were transformed into “infidel pigeons,” in other words, ordinary minced meat in a cabbage leaf. Another version says that the name came from Serbia, where the word “cabbage roll” means “dumpling”. It turns out that cabbage rolls are not just meat in cabbage. Stuffed cabbage is a dish made from minced meat or vegetables rolled into cabbage, grape or horseradish leaves, and rice, buckwheat or pearl barley is used as an additive. And that's not all. Stuffed cabbage rolls can be lazy (yes, this is for those who like to eat tasty food, but are lazy). This is a simple and quick way to prepare cabbage rolls: instead of wrapping the filling in a cabbage leaf, this same cabbage is simply added to the minced meat. And there is no need to divide the forks into leaves, process them and wrap them with entrails - a complete time saver. The result is cabbage and meat cutlets that can be fried, boiled, baked, or even cooked in a slow cooker. The taste of lazy cabbage rolls is no worse than the usual ones. Fans of the “classics” can see the step-by-step recipe for ordinary cabbage rolls with photos at the link. Now let’s move on to the step-by-step recipe for cabbage rolls with photos for quitters!

How to cook lazy cabbage rolls in the oven, recipe with photos step by step
1. Cut the onion, the smaller the better. You can even grind it using a grater. And in order not to cry when cutting, soak a knife or grater in cool water.
2. We also cut the cabbage finely. The smaller the better, because cabbage rolls formed from minced meat and cabbage should simply stick together and keep their shape.
3. Transfer the cabbage to a separate bowl.
4. Pour boiling water over the cabbage, cover with a plate and let it steam for 5-10 minutes. This will remove the bitterness from the cabbage and make it softer.
5. How to properly cook rice for lazy cabbage rolls? Rinse it until the water becomes clear. Typically, cereals are cleaned in 5 washes. Place the rice in a saucepan and add water in a ratio of 1:2. Let's add a little salt, but it's better to do this at the moment of boiling, because cool salty water heats up more slowly.
6. When the rice has boiled, cover the pan with a lid, turn off the heat and leave the rice to steam for 15 minutes. Do not stir the cereal so that porridge does not come out. The rice should be half cooked. Why do we take semi-cooked rice? If you eat raw cereal, then during the cooking process it will absorb all the meat juice, which will make the cabbage rolls a bit dry. On the contrary, cooked rice will not absorb water, the meat balls will turn out loose and will fall apart.
7. Meanwhile, the cabbage has become soft. Drain the water through a colander. You can also squeeze the cabbage with your hands.
8. The rice is steamed. Remove the pan from the stove and cool the rice slightly.
9. Place onion, cabbage, minced meat and rice in a bowl. Onions will make the cabbage rolls juicier. It is better to take fattier meat, so the cabbage rolls will hold their shape more firmly. If you don't like beef and pork, try making cabbage rolls with minced chicken. By the way, the amount of rice can be increased to taste; the proportion of meat and rice is 1:3.
10. Salt and pepper.
11. Stir, you can test. If the minced meat is a bit dry, you can add one egg to it. This is the mixture that should be used to produce minced meat for cabbage rolls (I have no eggs).
12. We begin to form lazy cabbage rolls. Take a heaping tablespoon of minced meat with wet hands. We wet our hands every time to make it easier to roll the cutlets.
13. Roll up an oblong cabbage roll. You can postpone baking the cabbage rolls for some time by putting them in the freezer. Only after removing them from the freezer, be sure to let them thaw to room temperature, and then cook them.
14. Dredge the lazy cabbage rolls in flour and shake off the excess.
15. Place in heated vegetable oil (3-5 tbsp) and begin to fry over medium-high heat until an appetizing golden crust forms.
16. Turn over and fry on the other side until golden brown. The inside of the cabbage rolls remains raw; they need to be baked until fully cooked.
17. Place in a baking dish in one layer.
18. I have enough cabbage rolls to fill 2 molds.
19. Tomato sauce is a common addition to lazy cabbage rolls. The usual recipe for cabbage rolls sauce: mix sour cream, salt, pepper, tomato paste. If the paste is very sour, you can add a little sugar.
20. Pour in warm or hot boiled water so that the sour cream dissolves more easily. A little trick: the water in which the cabbage was steamed will do. We also add a little salt to the sauce.
21. Mix and taste. If it’s very bland, add more salt, or you can add your favorite spices. Coriander, paprika, rosemary, and basil go well. Spices can be mixed at home, or you can purchase ready-made seasoning. That’s what it’s called – seasoning for cabbage rolls. Although, without unnecessary seasoning, with just black pepper and salt, lazy cabbage rolls taste great.
22. Pour a huge portion onto the cabbage rolls, 5-6 tbsp. leave it. Cover the cutlets halfway with the sauce so the cabbage rolls remain whole. If you fill them to the top, they may lose their shape.
23. Place the lazy cabbage rolls in the oven and bake for 40 minutes at 180 degrees. What comes out is a lovely crispy top.
24. Chop the greens and garlic.
25. Take out the almost finished cabbage rolls, sprinkle with herbs and garlic, pour over the remaining mixture, and return to the oven for 3-5 minutes. The smells come out, remain colorful, and are not interrupted.
26. Lazy pigeons are a nutritious dish, filling {in itself}. And since cabbage rolls are prepared with rice, cabbage and minced meat, you can do without a side dish. But if you want the most satisfying lunch or dinner, you can serve lazy meat doves with an appetizing gravy with buckwheat, rice or mashed potatoes. The freshest vegetables will also be irreplaceable. And as an additive we use sour cream, which can be seasoned with grated garlic.
Our step-by-step recipe with delicious photos has come to an end, lazy cabbage rolls are ready. Bon appetit!
