The benefits and harms of coffee with cardamom (+ an old recipe for a fragrant oriental drink)
The beneficial characteristics of cardamom cannot be overestimated. Origin of the drink
Coffee with cardamom has a long history. After conquering the Arabian Peninsula in the 11th century, the Arabs adopted many of the customs of the Ethiopians, whose territory they dominated, including drinking coffee. At first, the Bedouins (nomads) crushed coffee, combined it with fat and milk, and, forming this mass into balls, took it with them to the desert as a tonic.
The drink to which cardamom is added has arabic roots.
After 100 years, the Bedouins developed a tradition of making coffee with cardamom and a real ceremony for drinking it. The development of manufacturing was troublesome, but it harmoniously fit into the image of nomads in no hurry. At first, coffee beans had to be roasted and ground using a mortar. A vessel with a long larynx and an elongated beak was placed on the fire and filled with water. Ground coffee and cardamom in a ratio of 5/2 were placed in a vessel with hot water, covered with a lid and allowed to boil.
Coffee was usually poured into small cups in 2-3 sips - specifically for this purpose, the vessel in which it was brewed needed a long spout. While drinking this drink, travelers had long night discussions about the news and rumors that were happening in the desert and around the world.
Usually Arabic coffee is prepared in Turks and poured into small cups
Useful characteristics of coffee with cardamom
The recipe for making coffee with cardamom has undergone some changes until it has reached our times, but the drink itself does not lose its popularity among coffee connoisseurs.
In addition to the fact that cardamom mixes perfectly with coffee and gives it a unique and inimitable taste, this spice also has a beneficial effect on the functioning of almost all organs.
Nutritionists say that cardamom improves the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract (the gastrointestinal tract is the digestive system of the organs of real multicellular animals, designed to process and extract nutrients from food) and provokes the production of gastric juice, which accelerates metabolism. This, in turn, promotes weight loss.
The drink improves metabolism
Having tonic characteristics in its composition, coffee with cardamom improves blood circulation (blood circulation throughout the body) , heart function, and potency. In Eastern medicine, it is used as a medicine for bronchitis and asthma because it is believed that cardamom helps remove mucus from the body.
Cardamom is also a disinfectant. Previously, it was used to treat wounds, but nowadays it can be chewed in order to get rid of a nasty odor from the mouth and to prevent caries. It can also be used to get rid of persistent odors of garlic and alcohol.
Thanks to magnesium in its own composition, cardamom evens out the functioning of the nervous system, helps to cope with anxiety and depression, and improves mood.
But in the eyes of coffee lovers who are prohibited from drinking coffee due to health conditions, all these beneficial characteristics pale in comparison to the fact that cardamom added to coffee minimizes the harmful characteristics of the drink. Naturally, it’s not allowed to abuse this recipe, but it’s nice to think that you can skip a cup of coffee without consequences.
Drink harm
Contraindications to drinking coffee with cardamom are similar to the prohibitions regarding regular coffee. Coffee with cardamom is not recommended for people suffering from hypertension. Coffee is a stimulant and excessive consumption by people suffering from high blood pressure can worsen the condition.
For diseases of the cardiovascular, nervous, and digestive systems, coffee is contraindicated
Also, pregnant and breastfeeding women should not try this drink. In the process of bearing a baby, most women face a lack of calcium in their own body. Cardamom itself contains calcium, but its amount is not so significant as to replenish the calcium washed out by coffee. In addition, constant and excessive consumption of coffee can adversely affect the fetus and make breast milk unfit for consumption.
People with ulcers or gastritis should not indulge in this drink either. Excessive consumption may cause pain (physical or emotional suffering, excruciating or unpleasant sensation) in the tummy or cause additional difficulties. The use of this drink is strictly contraindicated for people who have personal allergic reactions to cardamom or coffee.
It is always necessary to keep in mind that any medicine in large quantities is poison. In the case of cardamom coffee, its beneficial properties in excess doses can lead to health dilemmas
Crafting recipe
Despite the long history of its existence, today the recipe for making coffee with cardamom is extremely simple. However, the simplicity of its production does not detract from its taste properties, but on the contrary, it reveals the taste of coffee itself from a different side - the taste of bitterness becomes less noticeable, and spicy notes take its place.
Making cardamom coffee takes approximately 15 minutes. This drink should be brewed in a Turkish pot.
The drink has a sweetish, spicy taste
- Water – 150 ml;
- Cardamom seeds – 3 pcs.;
- Coffee - to taste.
- First you need to crush the cardamom seeds with the edge of a knife or in a mortar. It is very important not to try to transform them into powder, but to lightly press them to allow the spices to reveal their own scent.
- Then you should put the Turk on low heat, pour coffee and cardamom into it and let it simmer until the water foams up.
- Under no circumstances should the pot be allowed to boil, otherwise the coffee will become bitter. As soon as the foam rises, you need to immediately remove the Turk from the heat, let the foam settle and place it on the fire again. Repeat this sequence of actions three times.
- After the coffee has been brewed, you should cover it with a lid and leave it for 15 minutes, then strain it before drinking to get rid of the grounds and cardamom pods.
On average, unground cardamom costs about 200 rubles per 100 grams. You can also purchase ground coffee with already crushed cardamom in its composition. The cost of such coffee is slightly higher than that of ordinary coffee. But it is better to grind cardamom right away before production than to grind it for future use, so that all the spice does not disappear from the spice.

Coffee with herbs and spices is prepared all over the world, and one of the more traditional additions to it is cardamom. These grains impart a narrow, specific color to taste and smell, and are also beneficial for the body. But because the spice is quite strong, not everyone knows how much to add per serving and how to get the right balance of flavor. We'll tell you all about how to make coffee with cardamom so that it turns out really tasty and healthy, what recipe options are available, and what makes this spice special for us.
What is cardamom?
Cardamom is a spice from the ginger family. It grows in pods, each of which contains several grains. There are two main types of cardamom: dark and greenish, and also white (bleached greenish). Greenish is most often found in Scandinavian and Middle Eastern cuisine, and recipes in India and Asia often specify whether greenish or dark cardamom is used.
Greenish cardamom (Elettaria cardamomom) is the most common variety, and we sell this particular one; you can find it in the spice section of a hypermarket, whole grains or ground. This is the best choice for sweet dishes and drinks. This is what is used to make coffee with cardamom.
Greenish cardamom has a powerful taste and aroma with lemon and mint flowers.
Benefits and harms of coffee with cardamom added
Cardamom is used in eastern medicine and Ayurveda, and scientists have conducted several research studies to study its parameters, confirming that this spice actually has a beneficial effect on a person’s well-being, his overall health, and can reduce the risk of several serious diseases. Oh, this is how coffee with cardamom will affect your body:
- Protects your heart and blood vessels. Almost the most important property, for the sake of which it is worth adding spice to your morning espresso or Americano. Cardamom somewhat neutralizes caffeine and reduces its acidity.
- Reduces coughing attacks. This spice is used in some remedies for asthmatics, helps to open up the airways, reduce inflammation (Inflammation is a complex local response of the body to injury) and relieve tension, allows you to breathe more freely and fights bacterial infections in the throat.
- Increases libido and potency. Coffee with cardamom is especially useful for guys because it can have a beneficial effect on male strength, endurance, and at the same time relieve mild inflammation.
- Helps reduce weight. This spice contains certain nutrients (such as melatonin) that help the body burn calories and effectively redistribute fat, leading to weight loss.
- Worries about the digestive system. Special antioxidants improve the health of the pancreas and protect the intestinal mucosa.
- Protects the liver. Studies have shown a positive effect of coffee with cardamom on the liver; the drink predicts its increase and the risk of developing obesity.
- Reduces acid reflux. This simple natural supplement has a positive effect and helps reduce acid reflux.
- Takes care of the oral cavity. In almost all Eastern cultures, cardamom is chewed after food, which helps to approximately halve the number of microbes in the mouth, and thus reduce the risk of caries.
- Freshens breath. If coffee leaves a nasty taste or smell in your mouth, cardamom will perfectly remove it, leaving sweetness and pleasant freshness.
- Reduces anxiety levels and relieves stress. There have been studies that have shown that cardamom can help reduce and even prevent the appearance of anxiety, creating a calming effect, relieving symptoms (Symptom from Greek - case, coincidence, sign - one separate sign, frequent manifestation of any disease, pathological condition or disorder any life process) PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).
- Improves blood pressure. Cardamom can lower blood pressure, so if you like coffee but are afraid of increasing blood pressure, make it weak and add cardamom.
In one study, researchers gave three grams of cardamom powder per day to adults who had recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure. After 12 weeks, blood pressure levels dropped significantly to normal levels.
For most people, cardamom is definitely not harmful if consumed in adequate quantities. Contraindications may be:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding;
- Peptic ulcer;
- Colitis;
- Personal intolerance and allergies.
If you put a grain or two of cardamom in your coffee, you will literally not exceed a reasonable dose and will only receive benefits.
Cardamom Coffee Recipes
To make coffee with cardamom, you can use whole boxes or ground cardamom, which is sold in packs. But the whole one is healthier and more aromatic; it retains oils that quickly disappear when ground. Alternatively, you can grind it in small batches, for example, for a week, and store it in a jar with a tight-fitting lid.
To better reveal the smell and release the oils, lightly press the whole grain so that it cracks.
How much cardamom to put in coffee
For one serving, 1 grain is usually enough, if the spice is already crushed - on the tip of a teaspoon. It’s better to start with a small amount to see if you like this lemon-mint color. If anything, add more next time.
- To make espresso in a coffee machine, place either the crushed bean or the powder on the tip of a knife directly into the filter with ground coffee beans. If the machine grinds the grains itself, you can add the seasoning to the cup and let it brew for a little while.
- Do you prepare coffee in an oriental style, in Turkish? Place a crushed, slightly broken grain or about half a teaspoon per 200 ml of drink, no matter how many people you are cooking for. If you plan to add milk later, you can add more, but start small and then figure out what you like specifically for you.
Do not leave the grains in the prepared drink forever, they will continue to release oils, and if you add an already cooling Turkish drink into the cup, the taste may be too concentrated.
Try the following recipes to make coffee:
Turkish coffee, also known as Oriental coffee, with cardamom
Use a Turk or French press, a grain or a third of a teaspoon of ground spice. You can add milk and sugar to the drink if you like that taste.
Arabic style, with saffron and cardamom
The two most expensive spices in the world combine unsurpassedly with the taste of coffee and simply with each other. In the east, add about half a spoon of ground cardamom and saffron on the tip of a knife to any 100 ml of water.
Recipe in Italian, with cardamom and cinnamon
The standard is to grind the spices in a mortar, but you can also use ground ones, only a very small amount of ground cinnamon is required. If you cook in a Turk, you can put in a whole stick. Italians love adding cream or milk.
Indian coffee with cardamom and milk
Instead of half the water, take milk and boil the drink in a Turk; it will turn out slightly thicker and richer than usual. For espresso, make a double shot and add more heated milk. Alternatively, you can boil the grains with milk for about three minutes, and pour the liquid given to us into coffee in a cup or filter.
In Jordanian
In this case, take the same amount of cardamom as coffee. Try it only in this case, if you really like this spice; you definitely shouldn’t start getting acquainted with it with such a concentrated drink.
You can make coffee with cardamom and nutmeg, with star anise, ginger, cloves and pepper - this spice is mixed with all other acceptable “coffee” spices. It does not interrupt, but complements the taste, making it complex and multifaceted.
Is it possible to buy cardamom coffee in a pack?
In Arab countries, a huge amount of this coffee-cardamom product is sold: varying degrees of grinding, and even instant. There you can actually try it in any coffee shop. This mixture is usually not presented in our hypermarkets, because it is still somewhat unusual for the Russian market, and it is rarely prepared in cafes, except perhaps in specialized coffee shops. But there are still purchasing options:
- Most often, ground coffee with cardamom is brought as a souvenir from eastern countries, Turkey or Egypt.
- It can be purchased in specialized stores, especially those that sell oriental sweets and spices.
- From time to time it is found in online stores, some people order it on joint shopping websites.
You can create such a mixture yourself by grinding the beans in a coffee grinder or even a blender, and mixing with ground coffee beans at the rate of approximately 5 beans for any 100 grams of coffee.
A pack of beans in the store is completely cheap, so it’s worth purchasing and trying to make a regular drink with a new taste. Judging by the reviews, coffee with cardamom is definitely liked by the majority of those who have tried it!
