Iced coffee

Iced coffee

Iced coffee (glace) is chilled coffee with the addition of ice cream. There are a huge variety of iced coffee recipes. How did this recipe come about, which version is authentic and how to prepare real iced coffee?

Iced coffee: what is it anyway?

The name of the drink comes from the French verb glacé, which in a clear translation means “iced, frozen”, and in the most approximate – “chilled”.

The origin of the recipe is unclear. Some experts believe that mountainous Austria became the birthplace of cool coffee, while others attribute the recipe to French cuisine. It can be reliably said that iced coffee was popular in Parisian coffee shops back in the first quarter of the last century.

From Europe, coffee with ice cream moved to America and Japan. Now this recipe remains popular. Each country has its own variations of the recipe.

Composition of iced coffee

Traditional caffe glace is a type of cooling dessert that consists of cool coffee with a scoop of ice cream. Approximate proportions are 3 parts coffee to 1 part ice cream.

  • The coffee can be espresso or brewed according to an oriental recipe. In modern coffee shops, glace is made on the basis of espresso, but the drink was prepared a long time before the dominance of coffee machines, using oriental coffee.
  • It is better to take vanilla, cream or ice cream ice cream so that the fruit or berry flavors do not overwhelm the coffee bouquet.
  • Real ice cream is made from chilled coffee, but some people prefer to put ice cream in hot coffee, creating a very controversial version of the traditional recipe.
  • Sugar can be added to the drink as desired, but this should be added before the coffee cools down, otherwise the grains will not dissolve.
  • Syrup can be a candidate for sugar. It is often added as a sweetener or to enrich the flavor bouquet of the drink.

Coffee ice - a cool drink from Austria

Even real coffee gourmets, who prefer to drink the fragrant drink in its traditional form, want something special from time to time. In this case, it is worth experiencing the delicious, chilled coffee with the wonderful French name glace. The dessert is made from natural coffee with the addition of ice cream, and is unlikely to leave the most capricious and picky coffee lovers phlegmantic.

History of Glace

The cool coffee drink got its name in France. It was there that coffee with the wonderful name glace, which means iced, was served in the most prestigious coffee shops in the country in the early 20th century.

But the creation of such an unusual recipe is attributed to an Austrian bartender. A regular customer ordered a cup of coffee with milk at his favorite coffee shop, but the product was out of stock, and at his own horror and risk, he exchanged it for ice cream. The client really liked the new drink, and soon, cool coffee became the hallmark of the small Austrian coffee shop.

What is iced coffee?

The main difference between glace is the addition of ice cream. To make a fragrant dessert, coffee brewed in a coffee maker or Turk is cooled, and only later are scoops of ice cream and various additives added to taste.

Compound

To make glaze according to a traditional recipe you will need:

  • drinking water;
  • ground or instant coffee;
  • ice cream;
  • Sugar, honey, cinnamon, liqueurs and other additives are used based on your own taste.

Calorie content

You won’t be able to prepare a dietary glaze, but you can completely reduce the calorie content of the dessert.

  • the nutritional value of 200 grams of the drink without added sugar is 205 kcal;
  • if you add a teaspoon of sweet sand to the drink, the energy value of the dessert will increase to 225 kcal;
  • Glaze with the addition of milk and sugar or liqueur will increase the calorie content to 270 kcal;
  • whipped cream and sugar will raise the calorie content to 300 kcal.

The energy value of a dessert drink depends on the ingredients used. The more components there are in the glaze, the higher its calorie content.

Ingredients

The main ingredient is dark coffee, which can be prepared in any convenient way.

Other ingredients for dessert are selected according to taste: some people prefer vanilla ice cream, while others prefer chocolate ice cream.

Coffee selection

Thanks to ice cream, the taste of the coffee drink becomes soft, and the bitterness becomes unnoticeable. It is best to use ground coffee beans for making dessert, which have been standing for more than 10-14 days and have already lost their freshness and smell.

Also for dessert you can use cheap coffee bean mixtures or an instant version of the product.

Those who like a mild coffee taste are recommended to use Arabica beans, but those who prefer bitterness should use the Robusta variety.

Tap water contains a huge amount of chlorine and other chemical impurities that negatively affect the taste of the dessert. Therefore, to make high-quality ice cream, it is recommended to use filtered or bottled water.

Ice cream

It is better to choose a traditional cream or chocolate ice cream. But to reduce the calorie content of the product, it is also allowed to consume milk ice cream.

If you add creme brulee flavored ice cream to the drink, the dessert will acquire a pleasant caramel-chocolate color, but strawberry or pistachio balls will add fruity notes of smell and freshness to the drink.

Iced coffee recipes

Over many years of history, manufacturing recipes have been changed and rewritten many times. But the traditional version of the drink has remained constant, and all varieties are prepared on its basis.

When cooling finished coffee, you need to take into account the time of year. If in hot weather it is cooled to +10 +15 degrees, then in winter it is more pleasant to consume ice at a temperature of at least +30 degrees.

Since that time, the drink has become very popular all over the world, especially often ordered on hot summer days.

Almost everyone is racking their brains over how to say correctly: glasse or glasse. True, both ways.

Difference from latte and calorie content

On the outside, the drinks are very similar and can be confused, but in essence there is a difference, and a significant one. Both cocktails are prepared on the basis of double espresso, but the latte requires the addition of whipped milk with sugar, and the ice cream contains ice cream.
