Mulled wine time: how to brew a warming winter drink. 5 recipes for every taste!
How to make mulled wine: a traditional recipe
Traditional mulled wine is prepared on the basis of reddish wine - it is better to choose dry or semi-dry. To make it you will need:
- a bottle of wine;
- 2 cinnamon sticks;
- 4–5 clove buds;
- 1 tbsp. l. sugar (if you like sweet drinks, you can add more);
Optional: ginger, star anise, zest.
To prepare mulled wine, you need to mix wine, spices and sugar in a saucepan and heat over medium heat to 70–80 degrees. Even if you don’t have a temperature indicator, this moment is easy to find by eye: steam starts coming out of the wine, and a little later the first bubbles appear. You should not bring the mixture to a boil, otherwise some of the alcohol may evaporate and the drink will not be as rich. Remove the pan from the heat, cover and let sit for at least 5 minutes. Before serving, mulled wine must be strained so that pieces of spices do not float in the drink.
How to create non-alcoholic mulled wine
Mulled wine does not necessarily have to be alcoholic - there are many options for those who do not like or do not drink alcoholic beverages at all. Typically, non-alcoholic mulled wine is prepared from various juices - apple, cherry and, of course, grape. The extreme option seems to me closer to the unique taste of mulled wine. To make it you will need:
- 1 l. dark grape juice;
- 1 cinnamon stick;
- 3 clove buds;
- 3 slices (circles) of fresh ginger;
- 1 orange.
Optional: star anise, dark peppercorns, honey (add at the very end if you like it sweeter).
The manufacturing process is almost the same as in traditional mulled wine. Pour the juice into the pan, add spices and sliced orange. You can mash the orange slightly to release the juice. Remove the pan from the heat, without bringing it to a boil, and let it brew. Before serving, do not forget to strain the drink.
How to make mulled wine with orange
Orange makes the drink the juiciest and least strong, and also looks unsurpassed! To prepare orange mulled wine: you will need:
- 1 bottle of reddish wine;
- 2 oranges;
- a couple of lemon slices;
- 2 cinnamon sticks;
- 7-8 clove buds;
- 3 tbsp. l. honey
Optional: star anise, ginger, dark peppercorns.
To make orange mulled wine, you need to cut the orange into slices, put it in a pan and mash so that it releases the juice. At this step, I advise you to set aside a couple of orange slices to decorate the glasses. Add wine, spices and lemon slices to the pan with oranges, place the pan over medium heat and heat to 80 degrees. Let the consistency brew under the lid. When it has cooled slightly, add honey, strain the drink and serve!
How to make mulled tea
Mulled wine is not a drink for every day. For those who love its taste, there is a candidate: mulled wine-flavored tea. This drink contains neither wine nor juice, but thanks to the addition of spices, its taste is reminiscent of real mulled wine. Ingredients:
- dark tea;
- 1/2 orange;
- 1/2 lemon;
- cinnamon;
- carnation;
- honey.
Pour hot water over dark tea. Add a couple of slices of orange and lemon or the juice of half any fruit, as well as spices, to the teapot (or directly into the cup). Let it brew. Before use, add honey to taste.
For tea lovers, I also recommend the publication that I wrote in the beginning:
It seems to me that almost all of the recipes will be relevant in the winter
How to create mulled wine in 5 minutes
From time to time you want mulled wine, but there is absolutely no time to stand at the stove and conjure with spices. What should we create? In this case, I advise you to purchase a ready-made set of spices for mulled wine.
The production method is simple: pour the wine into a pan, add spices from a bag and heat to 80 degrees. The whole process will take no more than 5 minutes. Usually detailed {instructions} are indicated on the bag itself - I won’t duplicate it. The main thing is, don’t forget to strain the finished drink.
In the end, I would like to say that these recipes are not bad as a base, but do not be afraid to experiment and change them to your own taste. Try brewing mulled wine with snow-white wine instead of red wine, add tangerines instead of oranges, remove cinnamon if you don’t like it, and add vanilla if you want something sweeter. It may not be traditional mulled wine, but the main thing is that you will like it specifically.

Mulled wine in a new way: 5 unique recipes for your favorite drink
Autumn and mulled wine are made for each other. And not only because mulled wine dispels melancholy and fills you with wonderful warmth from the inside. It is also a healing agent for the immune system, which is gathering strength before the cold season. Now we propose to discuss unusual recipes for a wonderful autumn cocktail.
Honey-lemon delight
The recipe for mulled wine with lemon and spices is a good composition of vitamins and microelements that turns mulled wine into an elixir of health. It is best to choose reddish dry or semi-dry wine for it. Experts do not recommend using elite varieties - their sophisticated bouquet will inevitably be destroyed when heated. Dessert wine will make the drink cloying, while snow-white wine will give it a subtle sourness. So, cut the lemon with the peel into circles and place in a saucepan. We put here 2 cinnamon sticks, 4-5 buds of dried cloves, 5-6 dark peppercorns. Pour the mixture with 750 ml of reddish wine, add 150 ml of water and 100 g of honey. Stirring occasionally, heat the mulled wine to 70°C, cover with a lid and leave for almost a few minutes. Now you can strain the drink and pour it into glasses. Mulled wine with lemon and spices can be sweetened with honey when it has cooled slightly.
Fruity charm
The recipe for fruit mulled wine will amuse you with a whole cascade of smells and tastes. Citrus fruits, apples, peaches and apricots are felt more organically in it. For exotic options, you can take pineapple, mango or kiwi. Berries and dried fruits will perfectly complement the drink. In a saucepan, combine 100 g of blueberries and lingonberries, 2 mandarins cut into slices, apple slices and add 200 ml of water. Heat the mixture over low heat to 50°C, add 2 star anise, 10 pink peppercorns, a piece of ginger root, 3-4 clove buds, a pinch of nutmeg. Next, pour in 750 ml of snow-white semi-sweet wine and, stirring frequently, bring the mulled wine to a temperature of 70°C. At the end, add lemon zest and sugar, as desired and to taste. All that remains is to strain the cocktail and pour into glasses. Garnish the mulled wine with dark raisins with fried almond petals or a cinnamon stick - and you will be in a good mood.
Tea fun
Pair mulled wine with another favorite autumn drink, and you’ll get quite an interesting variation. It’s no wonder that the mulled tea recipe has so many fans. Tart dark tea with bergamot, thyme or fruit additives is suitable for it. First, brew 2 tsp. tea in 250 ml of boiling water and carefully strain. In hot strong tea we put 2-3 dried cardamom fruits, 2 cinnamon sticks, a slice of ginger root and a handful of light raisins. Please note that we use whole, not ground, spices. They give off a better smell and do not form turbidity in the drink. We also put here an orange cut into thin circles and pour in 750 ml of reddish wine. Stirring the drink from time to time, gently heat it to 70°C, then remove from the heat and strain. If you want to make this kind of mulled wine for children, replace the wine with a consistency of apple and cherry juice and sweeten it with honey.
Invigorating degrees
Mulled wine lovers would not mind slightly increasing the strength level. One of the most successful ideas in this regard can be considered a recipe for mulled wine with liqueur. To make it, it is better to take reddish semi-dry wine. Let's start with the syrup first. Dilute 100 g of sugar in 100 ml of water and, stirring continuously, simmer over low heat until the syrup becomes thick and transparent. Cut a medium pear into slices and, adding 2 cinnamon sticks to it, pour sweet syrup in a saucepan. Add 150 ml of citrus liqueur and 750 ml of reddish wine. By the way, mint liqueur also makes a fascinating combination; the main thing is not to get carried away with it too much. As usual, warm up the mulled wine to 70°C and leave for a short time under the lid. At this point you can add a pinch of saffron and a handful of roasted chopped hazelnuts. Thanks to them, the drink will acquire a sparkling amber color and a pleasant velvety bitterness.

Mulled wine with lemon and honey is very easy to make. You will spend almost 10 minutes creating such a drink, which is very important if you or your loved ones are frozen, for example, while walking in winter. Mulled wine will warm you up, causing the blood (the internal environment of the body, formed by liquid connective tissue. Consists of plasma and formed elements: leukocyte cells and post-cellular structures: erythrocytes and platelets) to pulsate faster through the veins, give a pleasant taste and help avoid illness (disruption of normal functioning, performance) for colds or acute respiratory viral infections, as a prophylactic with honey and citrus fruits.
Because the wine tastes sour and is also supplemented with lemon, then do not skimp on honey, especially if you like sweet drinks. Just remember that this sweet product is added to the liquid no higher than 35°C, otherwise it will lose its beneficial characteristics. Season the mulled wine with cinnamon and star anise; if desired, cloves and aromatic peppercorns. Some chefs even add bay leaves to get the most spicy smell!
So, prepare the necessary ingredients and let's start cooking!
Pour the reddish wine into a saucepan or ladle, pour in the orange juice. It can be squeezed out of new fruits, or you can buy it packaged in a store. Scald the lemon with boiling water and cut in half. Cut one half of the citrus into slices, then halve them and add the lemon cut into the container.
Place the prepared cinnamon sticks and star anise. If desired, the cinnamon sticks can be replaced with ground cinnamon. Place the container on the stove, turning on medium heat.
Heat the contents of the pan to 70-80°C until a light foam appears on the surface of the water. Turn off the heat and cool the mulled wine to 35°C. Add honey of any kind, stirring it in. Taste and adjust as needed.
Pour the prepared mulled wine with lemon and honey into glasses or cocktail jars or into a jug. Serve warm to family and guests.
